Join James and Billy on an epic coast-to-coast journey across the UK as they ask the question, which is best: the Yamaha Tenere 700 or the Yamaha Tracer 9 GT. The adventure bike versus a sports touring motorcycle. To put the bikes through their paces, James takes the paved route while Billy takes his Tenere on byways and green lanes on this sensational journey. Along the way, the boys: Ride on the beach next to the Irish Sea Explore the highest roads in England, including Harthope Moss and Grasshill Causeway Discover incredible green lanes and gravel roads that stretch for miles across remote country, like the Old Coach Road Follow the path of Hadrian’s Wall on a little-known track Ride the best biking roads in the Lake District, North Pennines, and Northumberland Cross the causeway at the Holy Island of Lindisfarne before it is flooded by the North Sea Oh, and they sample the world’s best quiche (who knew you could put a full English breakfast into a quiche?). The journey begins in Askam-in-Furness where James is left waiting on the pier with his Yamaha Tracer 9 GT adventure touring motorcycle, before Bill makes a grand entrance by riding a byway that runs along the beach. They then begin their journey east, through the Lake District National Park to ride the best biking roads they can find. This includes the Hardknott Pass and Wrynose Pass before they split up for the Tenere 700 adventure bike to take on the Old Coach Road green lane while James rides the Tracer 9 GT the Kirkstone Pass, the highest paved road in the Lake District. Next up is the North Pennines where they take their Yamaha bikes along the likes of the Hartside Pass and Killhope Cross before they split up once again. This time James rides the highest road in England, Harthope Moss (also known as Chapel Fell), while Bill gets a few more feet in elevation by riding the unpaved Grasshill Causeway on his adventure bike. After meeting back up, James and Bill head north, following the path of Hadrian’s Wall along a little-known track, before riding through the magnificent Kielder Forest with one aim in mine: travelling the Kielder Forest Drive. This 12-mile stretch of gravel road is a joy to ride. And while the speed limit may be low, it remains a pleasure to sit back, relax, and soak up the remote Northumberland countryside. Back on the tarmac, the boys dash across country, briefly dipping into Scotland, before crossing back into England to reach the end of their coast-to-coast to journey at the Holy Island of Lindisfarne. Taking their Tracer 9 GT and Tenere 700 across the causeway that gets flooded by the North Sea is a fitting end to a magnificent coast to coast journey and one of the best motorcycle tours in England. But which bike was best? Did the Yamaha Tenere 700’s off-road prowess outperform the Tracer 9 GT’s long-distance touring credentials? Watch to find out.
