Hampden Estate's 7 Year Old Single Jamaican Rum Overproof (60%, probably bottled 2018). This should be a monster, and it is, just... not as much as you might think. Since it's a blend of several different Hampden marques (cf https://cocktailwonk.com/rum-marques), from the mildest OWH up to the almighty DOK, the funk is surprisingly restrained, the tar-and-olives pot still heaviness going hand in hand with flowers and a nice cup of oolong. It's something that throws off my standard Tigermilk-to-Dark Magus scale of funkiness: it's like the entire mid-'70s P-Funk lineup showing up ready and able to tear the roof off the mother and instead playing some nice slow space jams. Does self-restraint make it a weakling? Well, I could easily see folks coming to this expecting a bottle of DOK and being disappointed (I could also see folks turned off by the old-school drying brutality of the finish). But for me, that makes it sharp. Precise. Massive and compressed all at the same time: in the video I suggest Ronnie Coleman circa 1998 (as opposed to 2003), although the extra huge of 1999 might be closer. One of the wonders of the world, in any case. Totally singular, phenomenal (91+/100), and a challenge to everything else for sale around seventy bucks. (Including the Glen Grant 15 I just reviewed and somehow forgot to mention as a point of comparison.)
