In this video, I share my thoughts on Kokuho (2025) — Japan’s official submission for the Academy Awards. Every year, each country chooses one film to represent its entire body of cinema, and Japan selected Kokuhaku, signaling just how much faith they have in this story. Spanning multiple decades, the film explores themes of ambition, failure, brotherhood, and the heavy cost of success — all wrapped in a gorgeously crafted, deeply emotional epic. But while I admired its technical brilliance, production design, and powerful performances, I struggled to connect with the story itself. Kokuho is long, slow-paced, and emotionally distant at times — the kind of film that will resonate deeply for some viewers while leaving others feeling detached. I break down where the film excels — its craft, performances, and thematic ambition — and where it lost me emotionally. If you’re a fan of Japanese cinema, Oscar contenders, or slow-burn international dramas that aim for greatness, this review is for you.
