A year ago, the Everett Silvertips lost 4-3 on opening night. On Sept. 20, the Tips beat Wenatchee 4-3 in a shootout to kick off the 2025-26 season. All three Silvertips goals were scored by No. 19, Zachary Schantz. Schantz also scored one of the team’s shootout goals, the others by Mathias Vanhanen (uniform no. 37) and Nolan Chastko (no. 18). A 20-year-old, Schantz came to the Silvertips at last season’s trade deadline from Regina. At 5’11” and 165 pounds Schantz isn’t physically imposing. However, the Sept. 20 of the Silvertips newsletter The Tips Jar has this to say about Schantz: “The Silvertips gave up a lot to acquire Zach Shantz near the deadline last year because his skillset was something that was necessary for the playoff success of this team, and exacerbated by the midseason injuries. Shantz is a 200 foot player who does everything right. Fans might not always notice Shantz - but part of the reason why is he never makes mistakes. An excellent penalty killer, good face off man, and powerplay distributor - Shantz makes his money on special teams and in clutch situations. But don’t think he’s just relegated to being a defensive center and puck mover - he scored 15 goals last year and looks to make the leap that Tyler Mackenzie made went he went from 16 goals to 33 goals in his overage season. Shantz is likely to center a top two line for Everett and will be a valuable leader especially when the NHL guys are at camp. Look for Shantz to really stand out the first two weekends.
