SEVERN VALLEY RAILWAY WINTER DIESEL DAY 37508, 20048 & GWR 1450

A Video of diesel locomotives 37508 and 20048 departing Kidderminster station with GWR 1450 steam train at the rear (very unusual). Filmed at the Severn Valley Railway Winter Diesel Day in December 2025 37508 was built in January 1963 and is still in use today by Loram, which I personally find amazing. I cant imagine how many mile she has covered in those 63 years ! 20048 was built at English Electric's Vulcan Foundry as Works no 2770 and entered service at Hornsey Depot (34B) on 31 December 1959 under its original number D8048. Subsequent allocations included Finsbury Park (34G) in 1960, Immingham (40B) in 1966, Tinsley (41A) in 1970 and Eastfield (65A) in 1971. It was one of the first diesels to be repainted in BR's 1965 blue livery, although it ran for a period with the BR 'double arrows' reversed after an incorrect application. D8048 was renumbered 20048 in 1973 under TOPS. It was then reallocated to the London Midland region in 1976. After being withdrawn from service in February 1981 but reinstated in May 1983, it was withdrawn at Bescot in 1990. 20048 was purchased in 1991 by The Midland Class 20 Association which had been formed in 1989. It was briefly based at Peak Rail in Matlock before spending a period on industrial hire to RFS Industries for use in construction of the Channel Tunnel terminal at Cheriton. It returned to preservation in May 1993 and was restored to its original BR green livery and number D8048 in 1998. After spending time at the Battlefield Line at Shackerstone and the Great Central Railway at Loughborough, D8048 then began a second period of industrial hire in February 2002, on this occasion to Victa Railfreight for use at Charing; the main railhead for the construction of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link in Kent. After 14 months, D8048 was stopped by mechanical failure and moved to Wabtec at Doncaster for repair, after which it returned to the Great Central Railway around April 2005. After brief periods at several other railways, D8048 moved to what would become its new home, the Midland Railway Centre at Butterley, circa May 2008. It was repainted into BR Blue during 2009, reverting to the later number 20048. And not forgetting little old GWR 1450 loco at the rear. 1450 (originally 4850) is a GWR 1400 class 0-4-2T locomotive. These locomotives, which were originally numbered in the 4800 series, were designed by C.B. Collett as a replacement for the elderly Wolverhampton '517' class, and were intended to work mainly on small branch lines. 75 were built at Swindon in three batches between 1932 and 1936, being fitted from new with auto gear for working with trailer cars and also with ATC (automatic train control) equipment. 20 other locomotives of the same class, numbered 5800-5819, were built in 1933 without auto gear and ATC, although some were retro-fitted with the latter. The GWR 1400 Class locos were used on the Severn Valley Branch where they worked services at the southern end of the line, including some as far north as Bridgnorth. Post-1945, coal shortages led to plans being put forward to convert a number of GWR engines to oil burning. 12 of the 2800 class freight engines were modified and renumbered in the 4800 series. As a result the entire 4800 class was renumbered 1400 to 1474 by the GWR in 1946. 4850 was built in 1935 to lot number 288 and first entered service at Oxford in July 1935. It was re-numbered 1450 by the GWR in 1946 and re-allocated to Slough in April 1951. While based there it was photographed in 1955 at Bourne End working an autocoach service to Maidenhead. A return to Oxford in September 1959 was followed by reallocation to Exeter (July 1962) which included The Locomotive Club of Great Britain's 'The West Countryman Limited' railtour over the Hemyock line on 24 February 1963 and timetabled operation of services from Tiverton.Further re-allocations followed to Taunton (November 1963) and Yeovil Town (October 1964) before a final move to Exmouth Junction in February 1965. 1450 was finally withdrawn from service by BR in May 1965 after a working life totalling 823,012 miles. 1450 spent her early life in preservation at the Dart Valley Railway (now the South Devon Railway) where it carried the name 'Ashburton'.[10] She was purchased in 2001-02 by her previous owner Pull Push Limited, of whom Mike Little is sole director, and re-located to the Dean Forest Railway. 1450 arrived at the SVR from the DFR in March 2014, initially on hire for the year. Subsequently 1450 has been listed as part of the home fleet. Although not powerful enough to haul service trains on her own 1450 did so in 2014, double heading with 4566 to provide the required power, due to a number of ongoing locomotive repairs leaving the SVR unexpectedly short on engines. The locomotive was regularly used on Footplate Experience duties, as well as appearing on charters and at galas on the SVR and elsewhere. #train #dieselengine #trainspotting #diesellocomotive #locomotive #steamtrain #steamengine
