This video is being presented at the Humans at the Cutting Edge of Robotic Surgery Symposium 2024, Jaipur, India. It was produced by Dr Jai Thilek, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi, India. Abstract: Robotic Arthroplasty in Ankylosed Knee We would like to report the case of a female patient with rheumatoid arthritis and an ankylosed left knee with 10 years duration, who underwent surgical release of ankylosis and robotic-arm assisted total knee replacement (RA-TKR). Accurate bony check point registration is mandatory for a RA-TKR, and registering the same in an ankylosed knee with altered anatomy was challenging. So, the robotic registering of the bone after ankylosis release osteotomy was done to successfully complete this procedure. An extensile exposures were not used here as we did not require any of it at the time of exposure in this case. Good clinical and radiological results were achieved after robotic arm assisted total knee replacement for patient with ankylosed knee, with improved functional outcome. In this case we have adequately preserved soft tissues which provide stability for the knee post operatively and we didn’t have any complications with wound healing owing to good soft tissue quality. Extended rehabilitation lasting 20 months was required to strengthen the weakened quadriceps muscles and also to attain the good knee range of motion. The patient in our study preferred to have a good range of motion of the left knee rather than to remain in a spontaneous fused position. Restoration of motion with a RA-TKR seems to be beneficial to the patient both psychologically and functionally. See more at: http://vattikutifoundation.com/
