(25 Jan 2022) Residents of a small village near the front line in eastern Ukraine said Tuesday they were exhausted by the conflict with Russia that's already taken more than 14,000 lives. Slovyanoserbsk is 300 meters (330 yards) from the front line, in territory controlled by Russian-backed separatists in the breakaway Luhansk region. "How long will it last?" asked villager Valentina Afanasyeva. "We don't have any energy to live with it. So many people have died." The villagers say they have been enjoying a rare moment when shelling wasn't continuous. Russia seized control of Ukraine's Crimea Peninsula in 2014 and backed a separatist insurgency in eastern Ukraine, part of a simmering but largely stalemated conflict with Ukrainian forces. With an estimated 100,000 Russian troops massed near Ukraine, many fear that Moscow is preparing an invasion, although Russia denies that. Moscow has accused Ukraine of massing troops near rebel-controlled regions in the east, aiming to retake them by force - accusations Kyiv has rejected. The U.S. and its allies are scrambling to present a united front to prevent that or coordinate a tough response if they can't. Moscow has demanded that the NATO alliance promise that Ukraine — a former Soviet republic — will never be allowed to join. It also wants the allies to remove troops and military equipment from parts of eastern Europe. The U.S. and its NATO allies have flatly rejected those demands and say that Russian President Vladimir Putin knows they are nonstarters.
