December 16, 2025 — Begin Again, Day 146, Gueckedou, Guinea People often ask what motivates me to cross continents by bicycle. I tell them that the hardest things in life have taught me the most. And that’s true. But there’s something else. Something closer to my heart. It surfaced when I was still a child, and I learned to nurture it by exploring the wetlands near my childhood home. In my twenties, it carried me across North America by motorcycle. And later, into my forties and fifties, it carried me across the world by bicycle. That motivation is a deep, unquenchable curiosity about the unknown. I think of the unknown as a distant horizon. If you’re inclined toward cosmology, you might imagine an event horizon— the edge of a black hole. You can’t see it from where you stand, but you know it’s there— out beyond your ability to see. Some people are content to ignore that edge— to speculate, to daydream, and then move on. I am not one of those people. I will cross any matrix, any set of challenges or roadblocks— in school, in work, or on a long day by bicycle— to discover what lies at that horizon. And once I reach it, I push it farther out. Then I refocus, toward the next horizon, and the next beyond. It is unquenchable. It has shaped my life. And for that, I am grateful.
