Il participio passato dei verbi regolari si forma aggiungendo “-ato” nei verbi in “-are” (es. lavorare-lavorato), “-uto” nei verbi in “-ere” (es. avere-avuto) e “-ito” nei verbi in “-ire” (es. dormire-dormito). Quando usiamo “essere” e quando “avere” come ausiliare? Usiamo “avere” con tutti i verbi transitivi (= che rispondono alle domande “chi?”/“che cosa?”). Es. “Ho studiato italiano”, “hai ascoltato la musica”. Usiamo “essere” con tutti i verbi riflessivi e con molti verbi intransitivi tra cui alcuni verbi di movimento (es. andare, venire, tornare, ritornare, entrare, uscire, salire, scendere, partire...), alcuni verbi di cambiamento (es. nascere, crescere, morire, cambiare, diventare) e i verbi di stato (es. essere, stare, rimanere, restare). Es. “Sono andato al cinema”, “Sei nata nel 1977”, “Siamo rimasti a casa”. Ricordate che ci sono eccezioni a questa regola. Consiglio: imparate quali verbi si usano con “essere” e createvi una lista in cui aggiungere di volta in volta un nuovo verbo. È necessario praticare molto per ricordare e per usare bene il passato prossimo. Quando usiamo l’ausiliare “essere” dobbiamo ricordare di cambiare il participio passato in maschile, femminile, singolare, plurale (es: sono andato/ sono andata, siamo andati/siamo andate) Ricordate che, tranne in alcuni casi, non usiamo il pronome insieme al verbo (diciamo “ho studiato”, non “io ho studiato”). The “passato prossimo” is generally formed by two words: the present tense of “essere” or “avere” and the past participle of the main verb. The past participle of regular verbs is “-ato” for verbs ending in “-are” (e.g. lavorare-lavorato), “-uto” for verbs ending in “-ere” (e.g. avere-avuto) and “-ito” for verbs ending in “-ire” (es. dormire-dormito). When should you use “essere” or “avere” as the auxiliary verb? “Avere” is used with transitive verbs (= which answer the questions “who?”/“what?”). E.g. “Ho studiato italiano” = “I studied Italian”, “Hai ascoltato la musica” = “You listened to the music”. “Essere” is used with all reflexive verbs and many intransitive verbs among which there are some verbs of movement (e.g. andare, venire, tornare, ritornare, entrare, uscire, salire, scendere, partire...), some verbs of change (e.g. nascere, crescere, morire, cambiare, diventare) and the state verbs (e.g. essere, stare, rimanere, restare). E.g. “Sono andato al cinema” = “I went to the cinema”, “Sei nata nel 1977” = “You were born in 1977”, “Siamo rimasti a casa” = “We stayed at home”. Remember there are exceptions to this rule. Top tip: start learning some verbs with “essere” as auxiliary, create your own list of verbs with “essere” and add new ones as you go along. In order to learn the past tense well you need time and a lot of practice. When you use “essere” as an auxiliary, remember to change the past participle to masculine, feminine, singular and plural (e.g. sono andato/ sono andata, siamo andati/siamo andate) Remember that, except in specific cases, we don’t use the pronoun with the verb (we say “ho studiato”, not “io ho studiato”).
