Did you know Daniel Boone played a key role in one of Virginia’s most important frontier outposts? In 1769, Boone passed through Martin’s Station in Powell Valley (near Rose Hill, Lee County) while on a longhunter expedition. He was surprised to find Captain Joseph Martin building a fort, just weeks before Cherokee warriors forced Martin to abandon it. Boone continued westward, blazing trails toward Cumberland Gap through the Clinch and Powell River valleys. In 1775, Martin returned to rebuild the station as a fortified hub for the Transylvania Company. That same spring, Boone, hired to cut a road to Kentucky, stopped at Martin’s Station with a crew of 30 men. They rested and repaired gear before carving out the Wilderness Road, the first gateway to the West. Boone’s visit wasn’t a one-time event. In May 1776, as tensions rose with the Cherokee tribes, Boone was stationed there again, leading militia forces. Just days later, Cherokee warriors attacked. Boone helped rally the defenders, scout the enemy, and hold the station long enough to evacuate local families. The station was eventually abandoned due to constant threat, but Boone’s leadership during the siege became legendary. Martin’s Station stood at a vital crossroads—20 miles east of Cumberland Gap—making it the last supply stop for settlers heading into Kentucky. Between 1775 and 1810, over 200,000 pioneers would travel the Wilderness Road. Thanks to the efforts of Boone, Martin, and many others, this outpost helped open the door to America’s westward expansion. You can still visit a reconstructed Martin’s Station today at Wilderness Road State Park—where history comes alive. @VAStateParks @SouthwestVirginia #HistoricExplorations #history #DanielBoone #MartinsStation #LeeCountyVA #FrontierHistory #WildernessRoad #VirginiaHistory #AppalachianRoots #CumberlandGap #OnThisLand #appalachia #VA250 #virginia250 #American250
