I've been sitting on two of the old Before-Times bottles of Palenqueros (La Maison & Velier's mezcal arm) for a couple of years now and continually pushing them back in the queue. (I did review the Omar Nolasco at    • Weekend Espadin Mezcal Double Review:...   but somehow never got to the others.) So when I got an offer to try out some of the new offerings just now hitting shelves, I jumped at the chance as it meant I got to try yummy mezcal and could also move the queue along. What I didn't realize was that I'd ultimately be faced with a lineup of eight of these things from two regions and four different producers. Which is, of course, super fun, but very much a "clear out the afternoon" kind of project. So here we go... Palenqueros Baltazar Cruz Tepextate Silvestre Mezcal Artesanal (San Luis del Río, Tlacolula, Oaxaca; spontaneously fermented over four days, distilled in copper pot still, 1000 bottles, bottled circa 2024; 48.5% ABV), 88/100 Palenqueros Baltazar Cruz Espadin/Sierra Negra Mezcal Artesanal (San Luis del Río, Tlacolula, Oaxaca; spontaneously fermented over eight days, distilled in copper pot still, 1178 bottles, bottled circa 2019; 50% ABV), 89/100 Palenqueros Baltazar Cruz Sierra Negra Silvestre Mezcal Artesanal (San Luis del Río, Tlacolula, Oaxaca; spontaneously fermented over four days, distilled in copper pot still, 800 bottles, bottled circa 2024; 51% ABV), 87-/100 Palenqueros Onofre Ortiz Mexicano Mezcal Artesanal (Bramaderos, Miahuatlán, Oaxaca; spontaneously fermented over seven days, distilled in copper pot still, 1133 bottles, bottled circa 2024; 47.9% ABV), 83/100 flower Palenqueros Onofre Ortiz Ensamble Cinco Magueyes Mezcal Artesanal (Bramaderos, Miahuatlán, Oaxaca; espadin, mexicano, madrecuishe, wild bicuishe, and wild tepeztate, spontaneously fermented over six days, distilled in copper pot still, 1305 bottles, bottled circa 2019; 48% ABV), 84-/100 flower Palenqueros Alberto Ortiz Espadin Mezcal Artesanal (Bramaderos, Miahuatlán, Oaxaca; spontaneously fermented over seven days, distilled in copper pot still, 1333 bottles, bottled circa 2024; 49% ABV), 87/100 Palenqueros Alberto Ortiz Tobala Silvestre Mezcal Artesanal (Bramaderos, Miahuatlán, Oaxaca; spontaneously fermented over five days, distilled in copper pot still, 400 bottles, bottled circa 2024; 50.1% ABV), 90/100 Palenqueros Valente Garcia Madrecuishe Mezcal Artesanal (Santa Maria La Pila, Miahuatlán, Oaxaca; spontaneously fermented over five days, distilled in copper still, 933 bottles, bottled circa 2024; 48.9% ABV), 87+/100 Overall, I'm reasonably impressed. The Onofres are just too floral for me, but it feels like they just aren't for my palate - more for those folks who love '80s Bowmore, maybe. But the Albertos are both absolutely delicious, with terrific development - the Tobala in particular is a stunner for the price they're asking. The Valente offering is the only thing I've had from this producer but it's fairly classic fruits-and-rocks Miahuatlán, and super yummy. And the Baltazars, the only offerings from outside of Miahuatlán, are (outside of the Sierra Negra, which is a bit more reticent) big and delicious and somehow get fresher and brighter with a splash of water.
