Externalised EU Borders, Repressive Partnerships and Migrants’ Rights with Mansah Amoah

In this episode of European Dialogue, we sit down with Mansah Amoah (University of Pretoria) to unpack one of the most urgent and controversial areas of European foreign policy: the externalisation of EU borders. We explore how the European Union partners with African states to manage migration, often through funding, training, and security cooperation, and what these “repressive partnerships” mean in practice for governance, accountability, and above all, for migrants themselves. Drawing on her doctoral research in law and human rights, Mansah sheds light on: How EU–Africa migration partnerships are structured and what shapes the balance of power. The human rights implications of externalised border controls, including detention practices and securitisation.
