(16 Dec 1999) English/Nat Story: Trisha Brown Location: Rouen, Normandy Date: Recent American dancerchoreographer TRISHA BROWN aims to take our ideas of dance into the future. Trisha hops to challenge our preconceptions about dance, and also it's relation to music and stage sets. One of her earlier performances took place in silence on the streets of New York. The only sound was passing traffic and her own contact with floors and walls. She argues music would have distracted her audience from the dance. Today, Trisha wants to move away from formal ballet style moves which make dancers look graceful and beautiful, but which she sees as unnatural. Instead, she uses intuitive movements, developing sequences and cycles of motion, a style she calls 'accumulations'. She says leaving traditional dance behind is a brave thing to do it's easy to hide behind beautiful movements. But while her new ideas leave her vulnerable to criticism she feels it's important to push back the boundaries. Trisha also points out the nontraditional results are a metaphor for her career. She explains she takes on a challenging problem, and when it's solved, moves on. Her 'accumulations' are her efforts to find movment that's somewhere between formal, decorative manoeveres and everyday gestures. Like her career, the resulting dance is cyclic. Trisha has recently crossed over into opera, winning France's Prix D'Or for Opera with her work on 'ORPHEE'. The Piece, 'M.O.' was based on BACH, with the dancers split into two sections, moving on their own against the music. She has also produced a trilogy of works based on Jazz. Trisha recently showcased her work at the month long 'October' festival in Normandy, as an artist in residence. There were performances of six of her pieces by the TRISHA BROWN COMPANY as well as workshops and meetings with audiences. For more information, contact Jonathan Davis: 00 3323 534 1124.
