(25 Jan 1978) The co-leader of the Patriotic Front Guerrillas, Zapu President Joshua Nkomo, announced on Wednesday that he would be meeting in Malta with British Foreign Secretary David Owen, to get "claification" of the British position in the face of Ian Smith's so-called "internal settlement". In a statement read to a press conference in Lusaka, Nkomo said that all considerations of the Rhodesian problem "must be within the context of a war situation". He said a cease- fire could only follow "an absolute guarantee of independence". Nkomo also rejected "with contempt" a Rhodesian offer of amnesty for guerrillas.
