(12 Apr 1976) STORY June of 1975 saw the new Portuguese regime hand over independence to the black majority in Portugal's former East African colony of Mozambique. The man who took control was the leader of "Frelimo", Samora Machel - a man who had fought for a decade against the forces of Portugal in a bitter and expensive guerrilla campaign. Now, almost a year later, Machel and his Marxist government have turned their attention to the freedom campaign in neighbouring white-ruled Rhodesia. They have pledged support for the black Zimbabwe guerrillas and, in March, closed their border with Rhodesia in an attempt to strangle the economy of Mr. Ian Smith's land-locked nation.
