The objective of this initiative is to protect endangered languages for the next generations. The I AM project reminds us that human beings and nature are connected and cannot be separated. The I AM project is the voice of the forests, the oceans, species, the earth and the sky. Any participant can be part of the initiative by recording their voice, reading the words of the elements of the environment. The audio files are stored and published on the official website. WORLD HERITAGE The general consensus is that there are between 6,000 and 7,000 languages currently spoken and that between 50% and 90% of them will have become extinct by the year 2100. The 20 most common languages, each with more than 50 million speakers, are spoken by 50% of the world’s population, but most languages are spoken by fewer than 10,000 people. An endangered language or moribund language is a language that is at risk of disappearing as its speakers die out or shift to speaking other languages. In its modern form, Greek is the official language of Greece and Cyprus and one of the 24 official languages of the European Union. It is spoken by at least 13.5 million people today in Greece, Cyprus, Italy, Albania, Turkey, and the many other countries of the Greek diaspora.
