Are you being SCAMMED online? https://www.aura.com/learn/how-to-tel... The first new scheme we’re talking about is built on romance and goes by the romantic name “pig butchering.” Scammers start off a romance online. As the relationship progresses, they start asking for money or expensive gifts. Is this person moving the relationship way faster than normal? Or do they seem like the perfect match? Online scammers normally try to rush relationships and mirror you to create a sense of trust. Their goal is to get what they want quickly - before you catch on. Also, you’ve probably heard of catfishing, right? That’s where they use fake pictures to be more attractive. A catfish will avoid video chatting or meeting in person. They could claim anything from a broken webcam to living too far away. If you’re not sure about someone, you can do a reverse image search on their profile picture to see if it shows up somewhere else. So how do you protect yourself? A good rule of thumb is: don’t give anything to people you don’t know in person. If you realize someone you’ve been talking to is a fake, report them. Now, besides the lure of romance, some online scammers use trust. That brings us to scam number 2: phishing scams. Phishing is when scammers pretend to be an organization that you trust, like the IRS or your bank. They may send links or ask for personal information. It’s important to remember that these organizations will not ask for your information by email or text. And they won’t call you for it, either. So if you get a request, that’s a red flag right from the beginning. On the other hand, if the scammers send you links, they are likely attempting to download malware onto your device. So how do you protect yourself? To start with, you should make sure any message or email you get is from an official organization. You can look for warning signs like spelling mistakes or mis-matched email accounts. Obviously, don’t give out your personal information- even if they start threatening you. And if you get fishy messages, don’t download anything or click on these links. Instead, you should report them to the FTC. Next, we have the online shopping scam. Normally this means that someone pretends to sell luxury goods at a steep discount. Then, when you pay them, you get a cheap knock-off. Or, the scammer could be buying something from you and “overpay”. Then they ask for a refund, which you give, just to find out that their original payment was fraudulent. They could also offer to send pre-paid shipping labels and then claim to never receive the package you send. So how do you tell a legitimate offer from a fake? Well, some tell-tale signs of an online shopping scam are: deals that seem too good to be true, low quality pictures, or unsecure sites. Also, if they ask for a down payment or only accept wire transfers, that’s another red flag.
