"Recovering the Purpose of Liberal Education" with Dr. Larry P. Arnn

Spring 2024 Pope Lecture (March 28, 2024 ) The purpose of a liberal education is to seek the truth and to develop in the young the character and intellect to continue that pursuit throughout life. Many colleges today have rejected this in favor of the view that the standards of perfect and imperfect, of good and bad, are completely subjective. This movement breeds narrowness and hostility on campuses where there was once civil debate and friendship. These colleges must return to the old understanding of liberal education if they are to save their freedom and recover their interest in the truth. Larry P. Arnn is the 12th president of Hillsdale College, where he is also a professor of politics and history. He received his B.A. from Arkansas State University and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Government from the Claremont Graduate School. Dr. Arnn is on the board of directors of The Heritage Foundation, the Henry Salvatori Center of Claremont McKenna College, the Philadelphia Society, the Intercollegiate Studies Institute, and the Claremont Institute.
