Is the Lexus IS250 engine a carbon buildup disaster or a truly reliable engine? In this video I'm tearing down the Toyota 4GR-FSE 2.5L V6 Engine to see what's inside, how it works, and why you should be aware when buying a direct injected engine like this one. The IS250 has become known as the go to for a reliable basic sports sedan, if a bit mundane. While power delivery is smooth and all components are made of solid metal instead of cost cutting plastics, its direct injection system is renowned for carbon buildup. I'll be doing a deep dive review into Toyota's GR engine series as I tear this engine right down to the block, explaining each component's function so you can rebuild yours at home, know what to look for as a potential owner, or if you're looking to tune and mod your IS250 to levels unseen in a base model sedan. Hearing a noise? Smell Fuel? Engine shaking too much? Have a Check Engine light? Oil Leak? The possibilities are its either a broken VVT gear, leaking direct injection pump, misfires caused by carbon buildup or a timing cover leak which are all common issues for these automobiles. Luckily, replacing maintenance items like air filters, spark plugs, oil changes, coolant and engine mounts are all fairly easy on the Lexus IS250, AWD, or IS350, whereas its BMW 3 Series, Mercedes C Class and Audi A4 from this era will leave your wallet dry. In this video I'll be covering: Direct Injection vs Port Injection: Toyota's missed opportunity to implement D4S. Dual VVTi gear train, cam on rocker arm design with a separate cam cradle from the head Failed Water pump designs - All to common on Toyota and Lexus GR engines Internal inspection of the heads, block, crankshaft bearing surfaces Piston ring inspection and why these engines burn oil after a while Inspection of the back of the valves and their seats and why the PCV system contributes to this Rebuild, modding and tuning potential - With the IS250 and IS300 base model cars now discontinued, is it worth investing in a 4GR, when you could directly swap in a 3GR from a GS300, or more meticulously swap in a 2GR From the IS350? The engine in the video was from an accident car that was still running. It was a 2007 Lexus IS250 with ~150,000km on it.
