News 12 Long Island was on hand as Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon Jr. opened the doors of the Yaphank Correctional Facility for weekly tours for high school students every Friday. Students received a unique experience into a high-tech jail facility where the inmates are housed in dorm style pods and officers can manage the jail with the push of a button. The facility boasts state-of-the-art technology and program pods for aging inmates, veterans, and women, all designed to foster rehabilitation. This year also marks the 40th year that the Suffolk County Correctional Facility in Riverhead has been offering its Youth Enlightenment Seminar (Y.E.S.) Tours to high school students. Suffolk County is the only facility in the Tri-State area to offer daily tours, which gives visitors a realistic view of the inside of a county jail. During the 2017-2018, 3516 high school students and 361 chaperones from approximately 50 school districts across Long Island visited the Riverhead Jail. Sheriff Toulon stated, “The Y.E.S. Program at the Suffolk County Correctional Facility is a unique opportunity for young people to see how poor choices can shape the lives of individuals; but I also see it as a chance for us to show students potential career opportunities at the Sheriff’s Office. I look forward to kicking off our new Yaphank tours, and adding some new stops that highlight the diversity of work we do. It will add a new dimension to their learning experience.”
