Chinese Students Torture Fellow Countryman for 5 Hours: The Shocking Case of Liu Yiran In 2015, a horrific bullying case shocked the Chinese-American community in California. Liu Yiran, a young Chinese international student, was lured to a park by a classmate and brutally tortured for over 5 hours by 12 fellow Chinese students. They beat him, slapped him over 100 times, poured cold water, burned his body with cigarettes, cut his hair, forced him to eat it, and filmed the entire attack. After the assault, they forced him to drive them home, threatening him to stay silent. But Liu bravely reported the truth to the police. Authorities quickly arrested 6 of the perpetrators. The main offenders — Zhai Yunyao, Yang Yuhan, and Zhang Xinlei — were charged with kidnapping, battery, aggravated assault, and torture.
