Truegoanews Lucio Gomes Margao Handi Khuris feast celebrated at Maina The Handi Khuris feast or Khandi Khuris, is celebrated annually on August 20. Handi Khuris means the Cross near the sluice gate. The Handi Khuris feast is also associated with the harvest and has been celebrated for centuries in Curtorim. A miraculous cross which is present is visited by scores of devotees every year and prayers are offered. These devotes come with flowers and candles to the granary of Salcete. A brass band will be present at the religious event. On the feast day, August 20, Masses will be held at St Rita’s Church, Maina. . The Handi was blessed by the priest, Fr Dominic Savio Vaz who will pray over and bless the work on the Sluice gate at 12 noon. The Rosary is counted on Rosary beads and various people even measure it on one strip of a coconut leaf, which is folded by an inch. As per sources, the importance of the event was to prevent water flowing back into sea/river by blocking it to conserve it for a second paddy crop.
