Macular Pucker Surgery

Retina lines the inside of the back of the eye and works like a film in a camera. Macula is the center of the retina, responsible for central and detailed vision. Macular pucker is characterized by distorted and blurred vision caused by an abnormal sheet (membrane) that physically distorts the macula. To cure macular pucker the eye is entered with microscopic instruments to remove the central vitreous allowing safe access to the macula. Forceps are used to grasp the membrane and peel this abnormal sheet off the macula. After healing, vision usually improves substantially.
