Bad Schandau is one of the oldest spa resorts in Saxony. Healing springs were discovered in the town as early as the 18th century. Bad Schandau is a "picture-perfect town": built in a medieval style, it features many charming houses with tiled roofs and cobblestone streets. All this is surrounded by high mountains and the river. Marktplatz is the town's main square. It is home to the ancient Sendig Fountain (Sendig Brunnen). The town's main cathedral, St. John's Church (St. Johanniskriche), is also located on the square. It was built in 1679. A short walk beyond St. John's Church leads to the town's main attraction: the Toscana Therme thermal baths.
