Sermon Title - The Risen Christ and the Radiant Church (Acts 1:1-14) in Westminster Chapel (London) While the world is both gripped by and repulsed by materialism, the church of today is not prepared to answer those who come asking about what makes Christianity work because it does not today have the knowledge or joy which was once the common possession of the church's first centuries. Carl Henry argues that one thing which the Early Church would be greatly disturbed by would be the way Christians walk around with such lackluster joy. They knew that Jesus was the risen one, who had called, commissioned, and confirmed his church. They were able to live with hope in the face of all that opposed them because they knew that he was at the right hand of the Father and with them through the Holy Spirit. If our church is going to regain its "radiance," we need to regain this "post-Easter after-glow" of the early Church. Carl Ferdinand Howard Henry (1913-2003) was an American evangelical Christian theologian who provided intellectual and institutional leadership to the neo-evangelical movement in the mid-to-late 20th century. His early book, The Uneasy Conscience of Modern Fundamentalism (Eerdmans, 1947), was influential in calling evangelicals to differentiate themselves from separatist fundamentalism and claim a role in influencing the wider American culture. The Henry Center for Theological Understanding provides theological resources that help bridge the gap between the academy and the church. It houses a cluster of initiatives, each of which is aimed at applying practical Christian wisdom to important kingdom issues—for the good of the church, for the soul of the theological academy, for the sake of the world, and ultimately for the glory of God. The HCTU seeks to ground each of these initiatives in Scripture, and it pursues these goals collaboratively, in order to train a new generation of wise interpreters of the Word—lay persons and scholars alike—for the sake of tomorrow’s church, academy, and world.
