It's tricky business to find better examples of Italy's endemic pomace brandy when you're living in Chicago, but happily the first serious one I stumbled across - the Marolo Nivis '06 I reviewed last year ( • Marolo "Nivis" 13yo Grappa di Barolo 2006 ... ) - was a really, really good one, enough to score a place on my year's end list. It just kisses greatness and, more impressively still, is crazy easy-drinking for something so very assertive and complex. I obviously had to hunt down more stuff from these folks from Alba... and, well, here we are. Up for review today are the "For Four" gift pack of their standard Barolo grappa lineup, plus a moscato-based grappa thrown in for fun. Stats: Marolo Moscato Grappa (Distilleria Santa Teresa, Alba; L191051, bottled 2019; 42% ABV), 79/100 Marolo 9 Year Old Barolo Grappa (Distilleria Santa Teresa, Alba; 100% Nebbiolo aged in oak and acacia, 1997-2006; 50% ABV), 87/100 Marolo 12 Year Old Barolo Grappa (Distilleria Santa Teresa, Alba; L141551; 100% Nebbiolo aged in oak and acacia, 2002-2014; 50% ABV), 87/100 Marolo 15 Year Old Barolo Grappa (Distilleria Santa Teresa, Alba; L142371; 100% Nebbiolo aged in oak and acacia, 1999 -2014; 50% ABV), 88/100 Marolo 20 Year Old Barolo Grappa (Distilleria Santa Teresa, Alba; L141891; 100% Nebbiolo aged in oak and acacia, 1994-2014; 50% ABV), 87/100 There's no getting around it, the moscato grappa has had sugar added (or it's "dosed," if you're looking for a more polite way of saying they added sugar), and it plays total havoc with its behavior on the palate. Really nice distillate, but the sugar has to go before I can recommend that viewers buy a bottle. (Although as long as I'm at it, the bottling strength could also use a bump.) No such qualifications need be made for the nebbiolo-based Barolo grappas, which are all interestingly different and uniformly excellent. The 15yo edges out the others for me, but every single one of these bottlings can hold its head high against the most respected spirits of the world; I especially think they'd shock a lot of people if dropped into a whisky tasting. Buy one without fear, or better yet buy the gift set. The only bad thing I can think to say is that the Nivis is even better still... and when a distillery's limited editions are actually better than the regular lineup while being similarly priced, well, am I really supposed to complain?
