In July 2025, during a long-held dream to explore the American Midwest, I found myself arriving in Valentine, after travelling through the Badlands and Mount Rushmore. Valentine sits in the north of Nebraska, close to South Dakota, and it has that calm, unhurried feel that defines so many small towns in this part of the world. After a chat with a lovely woman in a Western outfitters shop, I heard about a local rodeo taking place in Greeley and decided to head that way. It turned out to be a great call. Along the way, I stopped to wash the car, where a kind local stepped in with spare change when the self-service machine needed coins. A small reminder that in the US, having some cash still matters, especially when cards can be blocked without warning. I grabbed a sandwich locally and ended up learning about the regional styles of American meats and flavours, from places like Kentucky and Philadelphia. I also met a woman from Florida who described herself as Irish-American, which made the stop feel even more personal. I left a small tip for a young lad working there, five dollars well spent. Overall, this was a relaxed, welcoming stop. A quiet town, friendly people, and a very authentic slice of Midwest life.
