Her life took a devastating turn after she accused her Head of Department, Samir Kumar Sahu, of repeated harassment. Despite filing complaints with her college’s Internal Complaints Committee, the principal, and even reaching out to political leaders, Soumyashree’s cries for help went unheard. On 12 July 2025, in a desperate protest against this injustice, she set herself on fire near the principal’s office. She suffered over 95% burns and battled for 55 hours before passing away on 14 July 2025. Her death sparked massive protests across Odisha and beyond — from Balasore to Delhi — with students, political parties, and human rights organizations demanding justice. Arrests followed, including the HOD, the college principal, and two students linked to the incident. The Odisha Crime Branch launched an investigation, citing institutional negligence and harassment as central concerns.
