Smiljan Radić Clarke

Smiljan Radić Clarke, the 2026 Pritzker Prize winner, is a contemporary Chilean architect known for his experimental approach to design, with a practice that balances the elemental with the intimate, the monumental with the fragile. Over the course of more than three decades, Radić has developed an architecture that resists repetition and conventional stylistic categorization, favouring instead deeply site-specific, materially attuned, and culturally reflective interventions. Born: 21 June 1965, Santiago, Chile Alma mater: Pontifical Catholic University of Chile Occupation: Architect Years active: 1989–present Notable work: Serpentine Gallery Pavilion (2014), VIK Winery Features of Radic’s architecture: Multicultural Origins and the Construction of Identity Discovering Architecture Through Drawing and Education Architecture Inspired by Philosophy, Literature, and Myth Collaboration with Sculptor Marcela Correa Founding An Intimate Practice and Rejecting a Signature Style Site as Cultural, Social, and Environmental Context Material Experimentation and the Discipline of Construct Architecture as Emotional and Experiential Space Adaptive Reuse, Cultural Institutions, and Ongoing Inquiry International Recognition, Installations, and Global Practice Architectural Philosophy “In every work, he is able to answer with radical originality, making the unobvious obvious. He reverts back to the most irreducible basic foundations of architecture, exploring at the same time, limits that have not yet been touched.” – Alejandro Aravena, Chair of the Jury and 2016 Pritzker Prize Laureate “His buildings appear temporary, unstable, or deliberately unfinished—almost on the point of disappearance—yet they provide a structured, optimistic, and quietly joyful shelter, embracing vulnerability as an intrinsic condition of lived experience.” _states part of the 2026 Pritzker Prize jury citation. Awards & recognitions: Best Architect Under 35, Colegio de Arquitectos de Chile (2001) Architectural Record Design Vanguard Award (2008) Oris Award (2015) Arnold W. Brunner Memorial Prize, American Academy of Arts and Letters (2018) Grand Prize, Pan-American Architecture Biennial of Quito (2022) Pritzker Architecture Prize (2026) Key Projects and Works (1995–Present): Casa Chica (1996): Vilches, Chile. Carbonero House (1998): Melipilla, Chile. CR House (2003): Santiago, Chile. Pite House (2005): Papudo, Chile. Restaurant Mestizo (2006): Santiago, Chile (Bicentenario Park). Chile Antes de Chile (2013): Expansion of the Chilean Museum of Pre-Columbian Art, Santiago. Vik Millahue Winery (2013): Millahue, Chile. House for the Poem of the Right Angle (2013): Vilches, Chile (in collaboration with Marcela Correa). Serpentine Gallery Pavilion (2014): London, UK. NAVE Performing Arts Centre (2015): Santiago, Chile. Quotes: “Ideas inhabit things, I have always tried to build settings where others might discover emergent ideas.” “Sometimes, you have to produce your own roots. That gives you freedom.”
