William Byrd joined Elizabeth I's Chapel Royal in 1572, and probably wrote this anthem a few years later. The text, from psalm 21, was customised to address the queen by name. Following the death of Elizabeth I in 1603, the work was rededicated to Charles I, as it is found in the Peterhouse Caroline partbooks. During the reign of Elizabeth II, Byrd’s original was – of course - pleasingly fitting! This recording is dedicated to Charles III ahead of the coronation on 6th May 2023, also marking William Byrd's quatercentenary (1623-2023). Typeset from manuscripts held at the Perne Library, the Royal College of Music Library, the Library of Queens’ College, Cambridge and Christ Church Library, Oxford, by Hugo Janacek. The score, in a variety of transpositions, is available on CPDL. Ensemble Pro Victoria Joy Sutcliffe, James Robinson, James Micklethwaite, Toby Ward, Gavin Cranmer-Moralee, Piers Kennedy David Rose Soundsystems, Thomas Schubert editing. Filmed at St John the Baptist, Holland Park, with thanks to Fr Neil Traynor.
