We absolutely loved walking around this beautiful city, especially the gorgeous and historical cathedral - the crypt was truly fantastic! We want to send a special thank you to the staff of Ripon Cathedral for being so accommodating, friendly, and informative. Set in the glorious North Yorkshire countryside, with excellent transport links to nearby Leeds, Thirsk, York & Harrogate, Ripon is a cathedral city with so much to offer its residents & visitors alike. The magnificent 7th-century cathedral is located a short stroll from the market square which hosts a very popular market every Thursday full of artisan sellers and local produce. (https://visitripon.co.uk/visitor-info...) The city is well known for its cathedral, hornblower ceremony, and tourism - as well as being the fourth smallest city in the country. The city is a place full of history and tradition. It’s longest running tradition is the city’s “setting the watch” ritual which is an unbroken daily ceremony which spans 1128 years. Every evening the town’s hornblower blows a horn at the four corners of the market square. This tradition attracts visitors from all around the world. This fascinating ritual dates back to the year 886. King Alfred the Great visited Ripon on a tour commemorating his victory against the Vikings. (https://imfromyorkshire.uk.com/ripon/) Ripon Cathedral: With free entry, visitors can pick up trails for all ages in this “awesome and friendly” historic building, exploring its many wonders, like those before them over the last 1350+ years. Step into St Wilfrid’s underground Anglo-Saxon crypt from 672AD, the oldest built structure in any English cathedral. Discover centuries of craftsmanship in stone, stained glass and wood, including delightfully intricate carvings which are thought to have inspired author Lewis Carroll. Stop and listen to the living heritage of music when the choir sings.
