Diane and I, and especially Skye, our Norwegian Elkhound have been frustrated because of the lack of snow in Sequim Valley so far during this 2025-26 winter season. Having no plans for Valentine’s Day, when I got up and looked out our window, I could see a fresh coating of snow on the Olympic Mountains and foothills. During breakfast I asked Diane if she would like to go for a short hike on Deer Park Rd to see if we could find some snow for Skye, like we have done several times before. Diane was all in! As it turned out, we had quite the adventure with Skye, the highlight being reaching several patches of fresh snow at milepost 1! The last 9 miles of Deer Park Rd that terminates at Deer Park Campground near the top of Blue Mountain in the Olympic National Park near Port Angeles, Washington is gravel. This section of the road is closed during winter, and as a result, it is an ideal route for hikers, snowshoers and even bikers. The locked gate is at about 1,900 ft elevation, and the 1-mile milepost is at about 2,440 ft elevation. It was here that we found enough snow for Skye to roll and slide in like a seal
