In this video, Certified Arborist Cory Herpel will use a young cedar elm tree as an example to discuss the necessity and methods behind structural pruning. ➡️ The goal behind structural pruning is to remove what needs to be removed to meet the objective while leaving as much greenery and healthy tissue as possible. While younger trees may require lesser intervention, larger trees may need multiple pruning sessions that can span a number of years to address an issue. This particular young cedar elm is dealing with a codominant stem. Cory discusses what this means for this young elm and how he plans to correct it. ➡️ A codominant stem is a situation where a tree has two equal-sized trunks that meet at a midpoint. This midpoint area is actually a weak spot for the tree. As the tree continues to grow and adds additional weight to this area, the potential for the tree to split increases. It is ideal to establish a singular growth point for the tree to help maintain its structural integrity. 💬 Take a walk around your yard.
