Koalas found on the verge of starvation have been cared for at the Two Thumbs Wildlife Trust sanctuary for the past 7 months by a team of veterinarians, researchers and volunteers, and are now ready to be released into the wild. They will be closely studied by researchers from The Australian National University to see how they establish themselves in the burnt landscape. Three of the rescued koalas in care have been named after the three US firefighters, Ian McBeth, Paul Hudson, and Rick DeMorgan Jr, who were killed when their air tanker plane crashed shortly after dropping fire retardant on the sanctuary at Peak View in late January.
