Nobody like wasting artist grade paints so why not buy some empty paint tubes and save your leftover paint before it dries out? You may be surprised to find out that artists grade paint can cost hundreds of dollars per gallon. A two ounce tube of paint that costs $10 is the same thing as paying $640 per gallon! (Here's the math: Threre's 128oz in a gallon so you would need 64 two ounce tubes to make a gallon. If you pay $10 per tube that's $640) Anyway, one area where paint is wasted is leaving it on the palette for too long and it dries up before you've had a chance to use it. When I'm done with a painting I mix up all of the colors so that it makes a dullish brown, gray color. You can store it in tinfoil or any airtight container, but I've been filling up empty paint tubes with this leftover paint. The tubes will keep the paint wet until I can use it in another painting. The dull grayish brown color can be quite useful. Most natural scenes consist of neutral colors, such as rocks, creeks, and tree bark for example. This "palette gray" as I like to call it is a good shortcut to a neutral color. Also, most grays in the natural world contain some color so it makes sense to start with a gray that's made up from colors rather than pure black and white. Another use for empty paint tubes is to premix some of your most used colors so that you don't have to mix it from scratch every time. Paint tubes are available in a variety of sizes so you can create some really large batches of colors to save time. 🖌 ART SUPPLIES USED IN THIS VIDEO As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
