Dorothea knew she wanted to be a photographer. She understood being overlooked after polio left her with a limp and her classmates avoided her. It also gave her a sense of empathy. When the Great Depression struck, that empathy led Dorothea to take her camera to the streets, the unemployed, the poor, the hungry, the forgotten. What others neglected or ignored, Dorothea documented on film. She took their photos so the world could see them. Her best known photo was an image of a migrant worker who ultimately became the face of the Depression. Appropriate for Women's History Month, lessons about the Great Depression, and the art of photography.
