The Battle of New Orleans was fought on January 8, 1815, between the British Army under Major General Sir Edward Pakenham and the United States Army under Brevet Major General Andrew Jackson, roughly 5 miles southeast of the French Quarter of New Orleans, in the current suburb of Chalmette, Louisiana ¹. The battle was the climax of the five-month Gulf Campaign (September 1814 to February 1815) by Britain to try to take New Orleans, West Florida, and possibly Louisiana Territory which began at the First Battle of Fort Bowyer ⁶. Despite a large British advantage in numbers, training, and experience, the American forces defeated a poorly executed assault in slightly more than 30 minutes. The Americans suffered just 71 casualties, while the British suffered over 2,000, including the deaths of the commanding general, Major General Sir Edward Pakenham, and his second-in-command, Major General Samuel Gibbs ⁶. Jean Lafitte, a pirate who operated out of Barataria Bay in Louisiana, played a significant role in the battle. He and his men provided artillery support to the American forces, which helped to turn the tide of the battle ²³. The expert cannon fire of Jackson’s troops, including Lafitte’s Baratarians, contributed to the American victories during the New Orleans campaign that culminated with the Battle of New Orleans on January 8, 1815 ². The British forces used a variety of tactics during the battle, including a frontal assault on the American lines and an attempt to flank the American position. However, they were unable to break through the American defenses, which were well-entrenched and well-defended ¹. The Americans used a combination of artillery and small arms fire to repel the British assault, and their superior position and training allowed them to hold the line against the British onslaught ¹. The American forces had a total of 13 cannons, while the British had 18 ⁷. The British forces attempted to use their artillery to break through the American lines, but they were unable to do so due to the superior position of the American forces ¹. In summary, the Battle of New Orleans was a significant victory for the American forces, who were able to repel a much larger and better-trained British force. The battle was won due to a combination of superior tactics, training, and positioning, as well as the support of Jean Lafitte and his men.
