The Guest Preacher at the County Antrim Last Saturday Demonstration was none other than Sir Knight Rev. Dr. R. T. William McCrea. Former Democratic Unionist Party MLA and member of Parliament and presently a peer in the house of Lords as The Lord McCrea of Magherafelt and Cookstown. Also prominent as a minister of the Free Presbyterian Church and a well known gospel singer. As part of the platform proceedings; particularly during the religious element, one would normally expect some form of abbreviated Biblical exposition with an emphasis on gospel proclamation. Certainly something that would fit into the definition of being Faith Foused, Bible Based and Christ Centered. What those who braved the damp and windy conditions witnessed from the platform / pulpit / soapbox, was a mixed bagged of socally conservative idelogy, puritanism as well as gospel preaching. Topics ranged from the abortion and assisted dying (Suicide / murder depending on your viewpoint) bills, the general decline of moral standards in society (particularly amongst the younger generation), false religions and false gospels. Harkening back to a bygone golden age when the bible was the centre of the Ulster home. Brainwashing of the younger generation by governments. The period of the martyrs and martyrology. As well as mentions of declining church attendances and Church closures, gospel tract littering, the Irish sea border and the motto of the Ulster Volunteer Force*. Certainly there is a time and place for the discussion of such ancilliary issues, but probably in some other sphere. However in fairness as least half the time could be defined as gospel preaching with about 8 minutes from 6:20 and another 6 from 20:30. Fact Checking (rembering that someone accountable to the word of God, should also be held accountable to the whole truth): Under new legislation it is proposed that Women can no longer be prosecuted under the Offences Against the Person Act 1861 and Infant Life (Preservation) Act 1929 for ending their own pregnancies. Assisted abortions are still only permitted up to 24 week, in normal circumstances. However opponents claim that this change would effectively permit abortion up to the point of birth. The Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill; as it states, only applies to adults who have a defined terminal illness and is subject to certain safeguards and protections. Opponents state that these safeguards aren't rigorous enough. Activists representing the elderly and those with disabilities are also concerned that the scope could eventually be increased. The number of primary school closures in England can be linked to falling birth rates as well as demographic changes and poulation shifts. You also need to take into context the cost of living, lack of affordable housing, the cost and availability of childcare and the benefit cap, rather than attribute it directly to the number of abortions. *50 years ago Rev. McCrea conducted the funeral service of one of the UVF members killed prior to the Miami Showband massacre. At the time Mr McCrea stated that whilst he was "not condoning any act that was done" he "had a message to deliver and when people were there in great numbers it was an opportunity to preach the gospel." The funeral was accompanied by a large procession of people in paramilitary style attire. [The UVF which was initially banned in 1966 (lifted in 1974) was subsequentially declared an illegal organisation in October 1975]. Mr McCrea further stated: "When the Westminster Government and weak Unionist Administration failed to defend the country naturally young men would want to defend it themselves" and "It wasn't wrong for our fathers so if this country is being pushed into a united Ireland it will have to be defended" In contrast the local Presbyterian minister (the late Rev. Dr. Andrew Rodgers) who was unavailable at the time (the attacker / victim being a lapsed member), said he would not have been opposed to conducting a private funeral with no paramilitary trappings, out of respect for family members. Saying that it would not be condoning the cause of the death. Further stating that "The Church should not in any way indicate it's sympathy with the cause of the UVF." A spokesperson for the PCI also stated that although they had a duty to bereaved famalies, 'Church ocassions should not be made an opportunity for political demonstrations.'
