But are their factory-made shoes actually worth $1,250 -$1,750 per pair? 01:00 Edward Green Shoe History Northampton is a town in England’s East Midlands region with a long history of leatherworking and shoemaking. Edward Green, at the age of just 12 years old, joined the industry as an apprentice clicker. Throughout his training in cutting out the various components that make a pair of shoes, he learned a great deal about how to look for quality in not only the finished goods but also in the materials that make them. As he grew more skilled in his role, Green realized there was a growing space in the market for shoes of a higher quality. Driven by an ambition to make a class of footwear higher than that on the market, Edward Green established his own workshop in 1890. 05:05 Edward Green Today Although Edward Green no longer possesses a bespoke program, the company still focuses on quality, not quantity. With a smaller output, the theory is Edward Green allows more time per pair of shoes thus, hopefully resulting in a higher quality product. 05:37 Materials Edward Green takes pride in stating they select fine European calf leathers. 06:39 Construction Details The shoes are hand-clicked. The shoe is closed, or stitched together, by machine and then the uppers are attached to the last by a combination of machine and hand techniques. The majority of the shoes are Goodyear Welted. Edward Green uses a cork filler before the outsole goes on. The welts and closed channel soles are machine stitched. Edward Green pays close attention to the look of their soles. The color is achieved through pigments and polish applied by hand. 14:20 Lasts Throughout the range, there is a distinct preference for understated, classic designs with no fussy detailing. Edward Green has had different last shapes throughout the years. But a few remain as the brand’s lasts of choice: → The soft chisel toed 888 → The almond toed 82 → The round-toed 202 → And somewhere in the middle is 184, Edward Green’s loafer last 16:24 Styles: → Chelsea - £965 / $1285 → A penny loafer style called Piccadilly - £965 / $1285 → A split toe derby named Dover - £1200 / $1600 → And a derby boot that has been in production since the 1930s known as Galway - £1215 / $1610 18:00 Pros & Cons 21:32 So, Is It Worth It? Overall, I would conclude that with the quality of materials used, the level of workmanship at this price point, the selection of different sizes but most of all, the classic nature of the shoe’s designs, Make Edward Green shoes is worth it, if they are on a steep discount sale only. 23:26 Outfit Rundown
