Afturmath live at What Hackers Yearn 2025

I was honored to play the closing live set for the main stage at What Hackers Yearn 2025 (WHY2025). It was great to see the crowd dancing alongside live lasers and flames by my friend Dimitri Modderman aka DM Laser and Licht. Despite some technical issues, I’m happy with what I was able to play and excited to tweak things for my next show 🙂. Thanks to Erik Heskes for the intro, all the volunteers at Area42 who built and ran the stage, the volunteers from Chaos Computer Club who handled video and audio recording and production for the live broadcast. Special thanks to Maggiepop for the management and support! Most importantly, a huge thank you to the attendees of WHY who commit their time & creativity to build such a magical event. I'm looking forward to the next one! This video and audio recording are creative commons licensed and provided courtesy of C3VOC. The performance and composition is copyright 2023-2025 by Afturmath. -- More details for nerds below. -- Hacker camps are festivals of nerdery, where the nerds who are to other nerds what nerds are to regular people can bring out all of their favorite obscure interests, discuss in gratuitous detail technical things for which even the bowels of YouTube are not prepared, and express their true selves in an environment that supports individuality across the human and technical spectrum, and everywhere between. This was my first hacker camp in Europe, and I will certainly be attending and trying to play at more of them. Gear hightlights: Moog Subsequent 37 CV Moog Voyager RME 6Ux104hp + 7Ux104HP Eurorack system Ableton Live 11 -- D16 Phoscyon 303 -- D16 Drumazon 909 -- D16 Nepheton 808 -- UAD2 EP-34 Echoplex -- Eventide H3000 Band Delays -- Eventide Ultratap -- Eventide Blackhole -- Eventide SP2016 -- Ableton Grain Delay MIDI Controllers -- Ableton Push 2 -- 2x Traktor D16 (MIDI mode as D16 Drumazon controllers) -- Novation Launch Control (FX controls) -- Novation Launch Control XL (Eurorack controls) Apollo 8P (quad) + Apollo 16 mk2 (quad) This performance did not go as intended due to technical issues. I connected a cable wrong on my MIDI panel which meant no sync on my main lead synth for the first half of the set, Circuit Mono Station. Because of that, I cut out the first 4 minutes where I was troubleshooting while playing the intro song. I synced it manually by ear and continued on. I was also missing half of the audio for another synth, the main lead for the second half of the set. During setup a cable came unplugged inside my rack, and I missed it during sound check. I improvised with the CMS and 303 instead. Midway through, I also lost audio from the Moog Subsequent 37 bass synth and had to copy its sequence to my Moog Voyager RME and recreate the bass sounds live. That was fun. I rebooted the Sub37 and got it to come back to life. I think the "issue" was actually that I recorded automation which silenced the Sub37 and forgot about it when I transitioned into an improv-heavy part of the set. Sometimes playing live can be quite a challenge, especially in a condensed time frame. I think this was the 18th time I have performed live in the past 12 months, and I learn from every performance. :)
