Game Info --------------------------------------------------- Developer: Taito Publisher: Taito Year of Release: 1992 Game Review & Impressions --------------------------------------------------- The original Rastan arcade game is a genuine classic, taking inspiration from the likes of Conan the Barbarian and other high fantasy adventures. The sequel (or not-sequel, if you played this outside of Japan) is a real disappointment for anyone who was a fan of the original. It may feature bigger and more detailed character sprites, but the shuffling animation and plodding pace sucks the enjoyment out of the game entirely. Sadly, things get worse still when we take a look at the weapons system. The hero can equip himself with short sword and shield, a pair of claws, or a hulking zweihander. Personally, I don't see why you'd bother to use anything other than the latter, thanks to its extended range and attack power; it's the only weapon with which you stand much of a chance against the game's ridiculously imbalanced end-of-level bosses, so you should try and keep hold of it at all costs. The final insult comes late in the game where, on the final level, there's a chasm which is simply too wide you cross by jumping. There's no alternative but to plunge into the pit and hope you respawn on the other side, and your bang out if luck if you happen to be on your last life - you best be ready to pony up a coin to continue playing. Rastan Saga II is a lacklustre arcade game which really does a disservice to the franchise, and is an uncharacteristically poor show of form for Taito. This might account for the fact the game was rebranded as Nastar for other regions, but there's no hiding from the fact this is poor game, regardless of the name.
