In this video, Dr. Swathi A. R, senior consultant at Shekar Eye Hospital, talks about eye spills. Eye spills is medically termed subconjunctival hemorrhage. A subconjunctival hemorrhage is the accumulation of blood between the transparent membrane covering the white of the eye, or sclera. Generally, it is spontaneous, but sometimes it can be traumatic. Spontaneous is the most common cause and is commonly seen in the elderly group. This happens when the pressure within the blood vessels shoots up. Patients with diabetes, hypertension and cholesterolemia are at increased risk of developing subconjunctival hemorrhage. Trauma can range from as minor as vigorously rubbing your eyes to as serious as post-injury in and around the eyes and post-eye surgery. They are asymptomatic most of the time unless it is associated with an injury. Symptoms can range from tiny spots to the entire white of the eye appearing red. In conclusion, a subconjunctival hemorrhage is a relatively common eye condition that occurs when a small blood vessel in the eye's conjunctiva breaks and causes blood to leak into the surrounding area. While the appearance of a red patch on the white part of the eye can be alarming, this condition is typically harmless and does not cause any pain or vision changes. However, it is recommended to consult with an eye doctor if there is an underlying medical condition or if there are other symptoms present.
