Children's reading foundation will determine their reading success in the future, as indepedent readers. How strong this foundation is will depend very much upon whether the child has learnt to read using the whole word approach or the phonics approach. In short, the whole word (or whole language) method relies on sight words, and the child's memory to learn lists of sight words.
