On 30 November 1995, Bill Clinton became the first US president to ever visit Northern Ireland – and took the historic opportunity to speak in support of the Northern Ireland peace process. This report by ITN's James Mates covers the first day of Clinton's visit, during which he went on a walkabout of the Shankill Road, where he met Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams. Later in the day, the 42nd American president visited the historic Mackie International textile machinery engineering plant. There, after being introduced by a Catholic schoolgirl and a Protestant schoolboy, Clinton made a speech urging the people of Northern Ireland to reject any who advocate violence as a means of achieving political ends, while welcoming those willing to engage in the democratic process. Clinton then travelled to the city of Derry, also known as Londonderry, where he reiterated America's support for the ongoing peace efforts. "Have the patience to work for a just and lasting peace. Reach for it," Clinton told his audience, "the United States will reach with you.” On 11 April 2023, US President Joe Biden arrived in Belfast to begin a four-day visit to Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
