'Tis Nature's Voice - Henry Purcell | OPHELIA

" 'Tis Nature's Voice" from “Hail, bright Cecilia - or Ode to St. Cecilia” Z. 328 (1692) gives us a very different side of Purcell than the songs we have done previously. No ground bass here, but a free-flowing, melismatic treatment of Nicholas Brady's text. In the context of the Ode this song serves as a still, reflective pause between more active and rhythmical movements. Heard as a standalone piece, it gains a somewhat detached air. To remedy this, we grounded the video very literally, shooting on a wooded hillside, in the midst of nature - including an army of ants! The abstract nature of the words is counterbalanced by including sensuous and tactile images, while a Shakespearean atmosphere is evoked by Sanna's guise, reminiscent of Puck in A Midsummer Night's Dream.
