The Islabikes Beinn 24 is a superb kids bike - robust, versatile and light weight - but not every family can stretch to £500 for a new one. So what about buying used? We picked up an old model, serviced it and fitted some new parts and upgrades, for less than half that. With carefully-targeted spending, you could bring this bike in for under £200 and expect to sell it on without losing much, if any, money at all, which is a far better investment (with far better depreciation!) than a cheap, heavy bike for the same kind of money, new. This bike build is for 'the boy in the park' and was kindly funded by our community on Twitter. Find out more about this incredible act of generosity from our online friends, on our podcast: https://www.familybycycle.uk/podcast/... and in this video: • We bought an ISLABIKE for the boy in the p... - and we've got a podcast on the way, documenting the moment two children were speechless when they received the surprise gift of a bike! To make our money go further on this project, we bought an early Islabikes Beinn 24, changed the hub bearings, tyres, fitted a rear pannier rack and new handlebar grips, amongst other things, to make it ready for another round of adventures with a new owner. We'll be coming back to look at the bike in the future as we do a few more jobs and maintain it. USEFUL LINKS (Please note - some of these will be affiliate links - thank you for supporting our work by using these!) Bike - The ‘Preowned Islabikes for Sale’ Facebook Group is a useful place to browse. / 826309394088435 Degreasant - We use warm, soapy water, and ‘Green Gunk’ for drivetrains and stubborn grease: https://amzn.to/37Iw58n ; for the nooks and crannies, and when working in the house, we use baby wipes and automotive brake cleaner: https://amzn.to/2VOTL5q Nuts and bolts - We change these for stainless steel replacements where they’re visible and corroded. Make sure anything structural (clamping bolts such as on the stem) are replaced with the right specification, if you change these. Just doing the bottle cage bolts can really smarten a bike up. We use Park Tool’s Anti-Seize Compound: https://amzn.to/3otW2iP but generic bike grease will do the job. Cables and bearings - You can buy kits, with a bike’s worth of components, but there’s lots of money to be saved if you buy the bits in bulk - these are common to many bikes! Cable outer sheathing is available in big rolls for brakes: https://amzn.to/3mU1oTY and gears: https://amzn.to/3mX6yPe Noodles(!): https://amzn.to/2VMOYBt Ferrules likewise, for brakes: https://amzn.to/2K2ABGQ and gears: https://amzn.to/3grW0oP Brake inner cables: https://amzn.to/39R1poa Gear inner cables: https://amzn.to/36VUkkx We like to personalise our bikes with colour-coded end caps from a mixed bag we bought: https://amzn.to/36Tdg3j Cable Cutters for outer and inner cables (these are brilliant, but don’t use them for other jobs around the house and spoil them!): https://amzn.to/3goHqP4 Crank Arm Bolts - Islabikes have ’square taper’ bottoms brackets and the modern-style bolts make the bike look younger. https://amzn.to/2JVE89F Pedals - I used Wellgo pedals very similar to the originals fitted to these earlier Islabikes: https://amzn.to/36T957D Rear Rack - Islabikes no longer sell these for anything but the current range. We were fortunate to find a suppler of them on eBay at a very keen price: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pannier-ra... Handlebar Grips - An open-ended handlebar is a serious injury waiting to happen. We used these, a cheap, plain black alternative to the Ergon GP1 which works well in smaller hands: https://amzn.to/37GVb7N Bell - To taste! Bottle Cage - I have used a few of these Zéfal bottle cages, in various colours: https://amzn.to/36PbSOY ARE YOU SUBSCRIBED YET?
