Lisbon's post 1755 "gaiola" construction

The video, produced using a 3D computer model, shows the "gaiola" construction system adopted in Lisbon in the wake of the 1755 earthquake. Basically, the main masonry bearing walls were braced by the timber floors and a system of interior timber framed walls in two orthogonal directions. Facade walls had also imbedded timber members to allow for interconnection with the transversal timber framed walls. Iron through-ties were also used to strengthen the connection between the masonry main walls and both floors and interior bracing walls. In the model, the masonry above de first floor was made invisible to show the interior timber structures.
