The city developed around a massive gold mine and has grown into a large settlement despite lacking basic infrastructure such as clean water, sewage systems, and proper waste management. Most residents work in informal and dangerous mining operations under a unique system known as “cachorreo,” where miners work unpaid for weeks and then keep whatever gold they can find during a designated day. Life at this altitude is extremely challenging. Oxygen levels are about 50% lower than at sea level, and temperatures often remain below freezing year-round, making even simple physical activity exhausting. Yet the city continues to attract newcomers seeking a chance to escape poverty through a potential gold strike.
