TRT World - World in Focus: The Death of Justice in Egypt, 2015, May 20

MORSI’S OVERTHROW A military coup cut the life of Egypt’s revolution short. The overthrow of the nation’s first democratically elected president by now president and former army general Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, has seen a tremendous set back in the country’s democratic evolution. Morsi belonged to the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood, the group that had hundreds of its supporters to die in demonstration camps of Rabaa and Nahda in central Cairo August 2013. When police forces used a brutal crackdown to disperse the camps, and arrested mostly all in sight including journalists, one of which is Egyptian Photojournalist Mahmoud Shawkan, who has been detained for nearly two years with no trial. SISI’S RULE During the former army chief rule, the country thrives to grasp what’s left of the democratic atmosphere, Muslim Brotherhood supporters were arrested whenever in sight, possessing a Rabaa sign became a crime and walking around in the streets with a camera is highly not recommended. Supporters of Abdel Fattah el-Sisi hailed the crackdown, blessed the swift shift to what can be described as Egypt Before the Revolution or worse. Last November, ousted autocrat Hosni Mubarak was found innocent of all charges, most prominent of which is killing protesters, money laundry, and exporting Egyptian Natural gas to the state of Israel, and in Early May, Mubarak was given 3 years in prison for using public funds into upgrading personal property, he won’t be serving anytime in prison since he was detained in a military hospital since 2011. MUBARAK IS FREE, MORSI SENT TO DEATH Then came a court verdict, so heinous and unbelievable that shocked even liberals, socialists, and most activists opposing Morsi and the Brotherhood. Deposed president was given the capital punishment along with over a 100 other defendants, some of which are already dead or serving time in the state of Israel, given that many defendants belong to the Palestinian resistance group Hamas, and the Lebanese militia Hezbollah. Morsi is sent to death for espionage to Hamas and for a prison break that occurred in 2011 during the revolution. A day after Morsi’s death sentence, Egyptian judiciary executed 6 civilians for killing police officers in a village called ‘Arab Sharkas’, claiming they belong to Al-Qaeda affiliated Ansar Beit Al Maqdis. Extensive research showed that Ansar Beit el Maqdis has released a statement following Arab Sharkas in March 2014, confirming all it’s members taking part died during the clash. Two of the executed six were actually arrested way before the incident, and one of the six is only 19 and has no political history. All of which begs to differ to Egypt constantly reaffirming it’s judiciary system has no political affiliation or does not serve a particular political stance or interest.
