Welcome to your Beaufort County News Headlines, I’m Kevin Libby and here are today’s top stories: -The Beaufort Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees will meet today in open session beginning at 9am in the B-MAC Boardroom 317 located at 990 Ribaut Road in Beaufort. Agenda items include a South of Broad Healthcare Report, a BMH Foundation Report, a CMO Report, and Operations Report and a Broad River Healthcare Report. A full agenda packet is now available on a link found at beaufortcountysc.gov forward slash calendar. -Birding is back at Fort Frederick this morning from 8:30am to 10am. Beaufort County naturalist Destiny Rains will lead an hour and a half guided walk that focuses of many different species of birds that reside in Beaufort County. Located at 601 Old Fort Road in Port Royal, Fort Frederice is a 6 acre property owned by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and Beaufort County. Fort Frederick is the oldest surviving tabby fort in South Carolina. And the oldest known tabby structure in Beaufort County. Built by the British colonial government between 1733 and 1735, its most important contribution to history was over one hundred years later on January 1st, 1863 when people walked across a dock over the top of fort Frederick to hear the first reading of the Emancipation Proclamation in the Southern States. The property is open daily from dawn to dusk. All county nature programs are free to the public with no registration required. More information is available at beaufortcountysc.gov/events. -The Beaufort County Citizen directed Transportation Advisory Committee will meet today at 1pm in the Port Royal Town Hall located at 700 Paris Avenue in Port Royal. Chaired by former Bluffton Mayor Lisa Sulka, meetings will be held at locations around the County so they will be convenient for everyone to be able to attend at least one. The deadline for the committee to submit a final recommendation of projects to County Council for consideration is Monday, May 11. Agenda items include the board business of discussion on proposed updates to the existing Design Guide and direction on advancing the updated design guide. Officers will be elected to serve as planning commission Chair, Vice Chair, and Development Review Committee Member.
